Description:
This package covers a variety of topics on evidence-based diagnosis, clinical management, and treatment of geriatric patients. Including subjects such as depression, osteoporosis, Parkinson’s disease, and statins, developing screening protocols and strategies.
Learning Objectives:
On completion of this library, you will gain a further understanding of:
- Prepare diagnostic tools, construct treatment plans, and counsel patients on cardiovascular health
- Differentiate hospice services from palliative care and develop communication strategies and plans to coordinate care for patients
- Evaluate the four categories within MIPS and understand the criteria for participation
- Explain the potential health impact on the older adult with chronic insomnia
- Diagnose and manage patients with atrial fibrillation and determine indications for the use of antiarrhythmic drugs vs blood thinners only
- Develop a screening protocol for urinary incontinence in women to be included in routine visits.
- Prepare treatment plans that include recommended approaches to outpatient management for patients who have COPD.
- Outline a treatment strategy for diabetic patients with comorbidities commonly seen by the family physician that includes pharmacologic therapy, lifestyle modification, self-management, and psychosocial assessment and care.
- Perform a differential diagnosis for dementia to rule out reversible causes.
- Explain the prevalence of complications from prescription opioid misuse in older adults.
- Identify recommended evidence-based services relevant to geriatric patients to maximize professional reimbursement
- Identify, assess and Implement routine screening to identify patients at risk for nutrition deficits.
- Explain the common sources of abuse prevalent among the older population
- Provide ongoing management of patients taking warfarin including therapy initiation, monitoring, and dosage adjustments to provide optimal effectiveness and minimize adverse effects.
- Use current evidence-based recommendations to determine appropriate pharmacologic, surgical, CAM, or watchful waiting treatment strategies.
- Select appropriate evidence-based, validated screening tools to apply to different patient populations.
- Advise patients on appropriate prophylactic strategies in patients with low bone mass and osteoporosis.
- Select appropriate management strategies for patients with Parkinson’s Disease, including an assessment of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments.
- Explain the factors that result in a higher risk of complications from travel-related illness in older patients
- Develop physical activity plans for older adults with OA for promoting and maintaining health and physical independence
- Prepare treatment regimens of lifestyle changes and medications with an emphasis on patient adherence
- Provide an overview of the recommendations contained within the STEADI Initiative to prevent falls.
- Utilize evidence-based risk calculators to assess the risk of future events and to guide management decisions.
