A Focus on Breast Cancer in Zambia and Uganda

A Focus on Breast Cancer in Zambia and Uganda

WCEA is supporting the rollout of a comprehensive breast cancer early detection programme led by Sanofi, Global Health Partnerships, the Association of Breast Surgery (ABS), Blended Learning UK (BLUK), and the Ministries of Health and national cancer institutes in Uganda and Zambia. The initiative strengthens the capacity of Primary Health Workers and Community Health Workers to identify breast cancer earlier and guide women to timely care.

The programme has developed a standardised global breast cancer training package that aligns with international best practice and has been locally adapted with national partners. Master Trainers and Trainers of Trainers received enhanced clinical skills and mentorship training, then cascaded this knowledge to frontline health workers across regional cancer centres, district hospitals, health centres and community settings.

Training covers breast health education, clinical breast examination, early signs and symptoms, communication skills, referral pathways and community awareness activities. By bringing these competencies closer to the primary care level, the programme aims to reduce late-stage presentation and improve outcomes for women.

Learners also access digital content through online learning using WCEA platform, supporting health workers in remote and hard-to-reach areas and ensuring continuity of learning.

This collaborative initiative is decentralising breast cancer care, strengthening national training systems and creating a scalable model for early detection that can be expanded across Africa.
