Webinar title: Diagnosis and Management of Parkinson’s Disease in Low-Resource Primary Care Settings
The session will focus on achieving early identification and diagnosis, and the effective management of Parkinson’s disease in primary care and community/home-based care, particularly considering low-resource settings.


Speaker: Natasha Fothergill-Misbah
Dr. Natasha Fothergill-Misbah is a researcher in the Population Health Sciences Institute at Newcastle University, UK. Her research focuses on ageing and Parkinson’s disease in Africa and uses qualitative methods to address the social, physical, and economic factors that influence health and access to care across the life course. Natasha is passionate about advocacy, community engagement and co-production, including the use of creative arts in public health research. Natasha also consults for the World Health Organization on the development and implementation of global policy on brain health linked to the intersectoral global action plan on epilepsy and other neurological disorders.
Objectives:
- To understand the importance of awareness raising and advocacy in early detection of Parkinson’s disease and in combatting stigma.
- To explore the use of simple and novel tools to identify and diagnose Parkinson’s in the community by non-specialist healthcare workers.
- To understand the role of multidisciplinary care for Parkinson’s that incorporates community and home-based care in addition to specialist care.
- To understand how community-driven initiatives (e.g., support groups) can support people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers.
