With advancements in healthcare technology, the population of older persons is increasing. The dependent nature of the older person, chronic life-limiting conditions and the imminence of death raise special health and ethical concerns in their care. The lecture on " Ethical Issues in the Care of Older Persons” will focus on the ethical challenges faced in the care of older persons and the application of ethical principles and theories to navigate complex situations when providing them with care.

Speaker:Dr Miriam C.A. Wagoro

Dr Miriam C.A. Wagoro is a Mental Health Nurse, International Research Ethics, Bioethics and human rights specialist; and an Associate Professor of Nursing /Midwifery at the Department of Nursing Sciences, University of Nairobi. She has long-standing experience in clinical practice, research and academia. She serves in national and international leadership/advisory committees including, KNH-UON IRB, the Medical Benevolence Foundation Center for Global Nursing Development (USA) Research Advisory Panel and the Global Expert Panel on Nursing Ethics in COVID-19 of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics. She is the former Director of the school- and Chairman Department of Nursing Sciences. She also co-teaches Bioethics as an international faculty for the UNESCO Foundation nursing program.

Objectives:

By the end of the presentation, the learner should be able to:

1) Define the ethical concepts that apply to the care of the elderly.
2) Explain common ethical issues in the care of older persons.
3) Analyze ethical principles that can be used to resolve the ethical dilemmas that arise in the care of the older persons.
