Genetics, Genomics and Epigenetics for Nurses – Part 2

Hosted & Sponsored by:

Webinar title: Genetics, Genomics and Epigenetics for Nurses – Part 2
Nurses need to know how our genes and inherited traits manifest themselves and affect our physiology. An understanding of gene function helps in understanding new therapeutic approaches for diseases they see in patients. The knowledge about inheritance patterns of single gene and multigene disorders greatly adds to their ability to help patients and their families with appropriate care. With knowledge of genetics and genomics nurses become the first line of healthcare providers that patients can trust for counsel about available therapies, advocacy for their care and help the community. In addition, nurses will be enabled to make the patients understand how lifestyle and environmental factors interact with our genes and alter health outcomes.

Speaker: Associate Professor Omanand Koul

Masters of Science in Zoology (Genetics), Ph.D. in Zoology (Biochemistry). from the Banaras Hindu University, India.
Carried out Biomedical Research in developmental neurosciences, genetic lysosomal disorders, autism, schizophrenia, and psychiatric drugs at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Teaching courses in Genetics/Genomics/Pharmacogenomics, and Biomedical Sciences at the Tan ChingFen Graduate School of Nursing.

Objectives:

  1. Explore the need for nurses to know the basics of genetics
  2. Become familiar with patterns of inheritance based on Classical genetics and their implications for families
  3. Be able to understand the need for newborn screening (in Ghana)
  4. Understand the need to integrate the knowledge of Genomics and Epigenetics in nursing care
  5. Understand Ethical, legal and social implications of genetics and genomics for patients and communities
