Health Expenditure, Governance Quality, and Health Outcomes in West African Countries

Hosted & Sponsored by:

The study investigated West African countries’ health expenditure, governance quality, and population health outcomes. Data is sourced from the World Governance Indicators and The World Development Indicators of the World Bank, from 1996 to 2021 for 15 countries of West African States. We employed the Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) to analyze our data. The study showed that a 1% improvement in the interaction terms will lead to improving health outcomes in West African countries. We recommend that governments and all stakeholders should keep improving on good governance in the health sector to address corruption, funds leakage, and misallocation issues in the health sector to enhance population health outcomes. Also, governments in West Africa should fully implement universal healthcare coverage (UHC) to alleviate high poverty levels and health expenses for people to be able to afford their health expenses and protect them from expensive health services.
