Module 4: Informed Consent and Ethical Considerations in Diverse Populations

The fourth of five modules. This module combines the Informed Consent, Recruitment & Retention, and Participant Safety & Adverse Events modules, including ICH & GCP guidelines.

Speaker: Roxanne Crosby-Nwaobi
Roxanne is a clinical academic ophthalmic nurse, Professor of Ophthalmic Health and Care at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, and the Program Director for the NIHR Senior Research Leader program. She has a particular interest in population health for underserved communities. She received the Nursing Times award for Clinical Research Nursing in 2021 for the Research Opportunities at Moorfields (ROAM) online platform, which increases patient/public access to research conducted at Moorfields. She is the recipient of numerous national and international awards, including the RCN Researcher of the Year 2023, ARVO Advocacy in Eyes and Vision research, and the Royal College of Nursing Fellowship.

Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the key phases, design types, and operational components of clinical trials within global and African health contexts.
  • Gain knowledge on the core principles of ICH-Good Clinical Practice (GCP)* to ensure ethical and compliant participation in clinical research.
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals in patient recruitment, informed consent, and trial conduct.
  • Demonstrate understanding of data integrity, participant safety, and community engagement strategies that support high-quality trial outcomes.
  • Evaluate opportunities to integrate clinical research practices within their professional settings.
