Hand hygiene is the fundamental and leading measure to prevent the spread of antimicrobial resistance and to reduce hospital-acquired infections. Several strategies are recommended to increase compliance with hand hygiene practice; however, healthcare worker compliance with optimal practices remains low in most settings hand hygiene reduces the transmission of microorganisms (including those that are antibiotic-resistant), increases patient safety, and decreases healthcare-associated infection (hai). Effective, timely hand hygiene is a cornerstone of infection prevention and control.
