This webinar will highlight the urgent need for Essential Emergency & Critical Care (EECC) – the first-tier, life-saving care that should be accessible to every critically ill patient, regardless of specialty or setting. We will discuss how strengthening acute care systems is vital to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 3 & 4) and explore the potential to save over 1 million lives annually if EECC were universally implemented.

Speaker: Dr. Halima Salisu-Kabara

Dr Halima Salisu-Kabara is a Practice Development Consultant and the Sepsis Coordinator, SIDOK Sepsis Research Group, a multidisciplinary team in Nigeria. Her vision is to reduce preventable deaths due to sepsis in Nigeria and Africa, and to institute patient-centered, equitable care in low-resource countries. Dr Halima is a proud EECC Champion, a Sepsis Ambassador. The Vice-Executive Director of the African Sepsis Alliance (ASA) and a Board member of the Global Sepsis Alliance (GSA). Director of Communication & Media, African Federation of Critical Care Nurses (AFCCN), and an Ambassador of the World Federation of Critical Care Nurses (WFCCN). Initiator of the Life Support Training Program, Anesthesiology/ICU, AKTH; Pioneering the ENLS Training in Africa, started with Nigeria (10-11, July,2023). Dr Halima’s passion is Knowledge-Sharing & Networking, workforce development, Sepsis & IPC Education, and Quality Improvement in HC Systems in LRS. She participated in the Expert content development group & External peer review group that developed the Global Report on the Epidemiology and Burden of Sepsis: Current Evidence, Identifying Gaps and Future Directions. World Health Organization (WHO), 2020. Presently, serving in many WGs which include COVID-19 Severity Classification, WHO Guideline & Clinical Management of Sepsis; EECC WG for Training, among others.

Objectives:

  1. To sensitize the Policymakers, Healthcare professionals, and the general Public on the unacceptable high Burden of Sepsis in Africa
  2. To proffer an Innovative Solution (patient-centered clinical pathways).
  3. By synergizing with the established roadmap – the EECC
  4. To integrate Sepsis Care into the EECC Training.
  5. A call to action on the importance of recognizing Sepsis as a Preventable & time-critical condition with urgent therapeutic need.
