WCEA in collaboration with the Ethiopian Society of Emergency Medicine (ESIM) is happy to invite you to the webinar “Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Osteoporosis: Emerging Diseases of the 21st Century”. There will be 3 presentations on 3 different topics:
1. Management update on osteoporosis
Description: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture.
Objectives:
- Discuss the increasing burden of osteoporosis.
- Identify risk factors for osteoporosis.
- Discuss the management of osteoporosis with an emphasis on glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.
Speaker: Dr. Becky Abdissa MD, FCP (SA)
Dr. Becky Abdissa is a consultant Internist and Rheumatologist practicing in a tertiary hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He completed his subspecialty training in South Africa.
2. Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD): an emerging cardiovascular risk
Description: MAFLD is the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome. It has become the leading cause of liver disease globally with an increased risk of cardiovascular events.
Objectives:
- Discuss the increasing burden of NAFLD.
- Discuss noninvasive liver assessment methods.
- Discuss the management of NAFLD with emphasis on its comorbidities.
Speaker: Dr. Hailemichael Desalegn MD, PhD
Dr. Hailemichael Desalegn is a Consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist practicing in a tertiary hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He is the head of the hepatology and Gastroenterologist unit at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College. He published tens of practice-changing studies in a peer-reviewed reputable journal. He has been crowned the Global Hepatitis Elimination Champion for his work on hepatitis in Sub-Saharan Africa.
3. Role of Dietitian in NAFLD care: updates in nutritional interventions
Description: NAFLD is the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome. It has become the leading cause of liver disease globally with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. Dieticians play a central role in managing NAFLD.
Objectives:
- Discuss the increasing burden of NAFLD.
- Discuss lifestyle therapy in managing NAFLD.
- Discuss the role of dieticians in NAFLD care.
Speaker: Dr. Zelalem Debebe MD, SRD
Dr. Zelalem Debebe is a senior registered Dietitian at Balance Health and Nutrition Consulting Plc. providing Medical Nutritional Therapy, care, and advice for individuals and groups. Over 20 years working as Dietitian in Hospitals and Communities, in the UK and Ethiopia. Assistant Professor at AAU, Centre for Food Science and Nutrition. A.A Ethiopia.
