Diaspora Connections, A Calling Beyond Borders
Improving African Nurses’ Mpox Awareness
Written by: Dr. Melonie Owusu, DNP, CRNP, FNP-BC, ACCRN, AAHIVS
As a first-generation Ghanaian American and a lead nurse practitioner based in Baltimore, my journey in healthcare has always felt like a bridge—between continents, cultures, and callings. When the Mpox outbreak emerged in 2022, I found myself on the frontlines of an evolving public health crisis, one that demanded not only clinical expertise but also acute cultural sensitivity, rapid adaptation, and a profound sense of responsibility. Being part of the response during that critical time shaped me deeply, reinforcing my commitment to strengthening that very bridge.

NEW ONLINE COURSE
Kangaroo Mother Care
Globally, 1 in 10 babies are born premature—before 37 weeks of gestation—and many more are born with low birth weight (under 2500g). Complications from prematurity are now the leading cause of child death worldwide. However, strong new evidence shows that a simple technique—Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC)—can save hundreds of thousands of these babies each year when started soon after birth. This is known as immediate KMC (iKMC).
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in partnership with Picturing Health and the World Continuing Education Alliance (WCEA) and with support from the Gates Foundation, has developed an online course to strengthen neonatal providers’ knowledge and skills in iKMC. Offered as a global good and eligible for CME credit, the course aims to reach as many providers—and ultimately, benefit as many babies—as possible.

LAUNCHED 2025
Global Disaster Preparedness Course
Disasters, natural or man-made, are increasingly common around the world. From climate change to armed conflict and refugee settings, emergency situations can greatly impact any health system. Children are especially vulnerable in these situations, and child health providers are often ill-equipped to provide care for children in these settings.
To address this need specifically in low-resource settings, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) developed a pilot virtual course to equip child health providers with an understanding of disasters, their impact on children and families, and how providers can better be prepared to address their needs during and after disaster events. This course is currently being piloted with a cohort of child health providers in Sub-Saharan Africa.

NEW SUITE OF NUTRITION COURSES
New Specialized Nutrition Courses for Health Professionals
Nutrition for Health Professionals is a series of six Continuing Professional Development (CPD) on-line courses that focus on assessing, managing, and promoting child, adolescent, and maternal nutrition. The courses will be delivered through interactive, case based online learning and will integrate cross-cutting themes of gender, WASH and nutrition. Courses are being developed collaboratively by the Increase Gains in Nutrition by Integration, Education, Evaluation, Empowerment (IGNIT3) partners led by The Hospital for Sick Children in Canada and local implementing partners – Aga Khan University in Pakistan, the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences in Malawi.

NEW BLENDED LEARNING COURSE
QUALITY OF CARE (QoC) IMPROVEMENT (QI)
Quality of care is the degree to which health services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes through effective, safe and people-centred care that responds to individual preferences, needs, and values.
To realize the benefits of quality in MNH, the quality of healthcare services ought to be timely, equitable, integrated, and efficient. Healthcare providers require competencies for integrating quality assessment for continuous improvement of the services they provide. As countries commit to achieving Health for All by the year 2030, it is necessary to consider the quality of care and health services provided to mothers and newborns throughout the continuum of pregnancy and childbirth.

To address this gap, the Centre for Global Child Health at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCMN), as part of the SickKids-Ghana Paediatric Nursing Education Partnership, developed a suite of online courses hosted by the WCEA.
To date, over 26,720 people have participated in the three available courses under the initiative.

IMPROVING THE EDUCATION
BLENDED LEARNING INITIATIVE WITH LSTM
Improving the quality of maternal and newborn care is critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal targets for maternal and newborn health. A key component of this is ensuring that the skilled health providers in place are competent and confident to provide such care. The Emergency Obstetric Care and Quality of Care unit at LSTM work with partners to improve the quality of pre-service midwifery and medical education and continuous professional education systems for skilled health providers, midwifery, and medical faculty.
To increase the reach of the educational opportunities we provide, we have partnered with the World Continuing Education Alliance (WCEA).

STARTED SEPTEMBER 13, 2021
FOR NURSES AND MIDWIVES IN GHANA
The COVID-19 response project is a continuation of the SickKids-Ghana Paediatric Nursing Education Partnership (PNEP), a partnership between The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM) and the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health with financial support from the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada. The courses were developed in collaboration with key stakeholders including Ghana Health Service (GHS), the Ministry of Health, Ghana, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Ghana (N&MC) who shared their expertise and experience to develop the high-quality courses. COVID-19 has highlighted the critical need for a cadre of well-trained health professionals in front-line care delivery to reduce preventable mortality and improve the well-being of children and their families.
A key activity in this project is the development of online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses that provide healthcare professionals in Ghana with knowledge and skills to care for patients in the COVID-19 era. The suite of courses titled ‘COVID-19 in Ghana ‘Promoting Physical & Mental Health of Children, Families, and Health Workers’ includes the topics of health prevention and promotion, child and adolescent health, vaccine communication and behaviour change, all eligible for CPD points.
To ensure the courses are accessible to as many users across Ghana as possible, the WCEA platform has been selected to host the courses. The WCEA platform enables users to download the course, so there is no dependency on a stable internet connection promoting equitable access. In addition, WCEA’s platform already has over 176.000 healthcare workers on the platform in Ghana. We look forward to more healthcare workers registering and taking up the courses and building their capacity in response to COVID-19.
